SCHOOL

The rush is magical. Waking up late, packing up lunch, running late while not finding the other sock, homework, projects, uniforms, sharpeners; The air is just bustling with the chatter of thousands of students, thick with the smell of yummy lunches, disturbed by the sound of the mic crackling and the in-charge teacher summoning us down for assembly. While the choir forgot the lyrics in the prayer, the head-girl stumbled upon her words while delivering the school pledge. It's a relief that we didn't forget the National Anthem. The disciplined rows of students getting restless, the teachers pointing out messy hair and long nails, the one-arm distances, and most importantly, the re-arrangement of the class height order after two long years. Sprint back to class to secure seats for ourselves and our friends and avoid the first row. Rushedly finishing the due homework in between periods before the teachers arrive, strolling on the corridors w...

Is Clothing an Index to Character?

Every human being is unique in their own way. We are all of different colors, heights, different body shapes, etc. Some of us may or may not be content by how we look but nevertheless, we wouldn't like people judging us for our physical appearances. And those who understand the wrath of being judged by their looks make sure not to judge anyone else.              Despite this awareness, we definitely make first impressions of people. As soon as we look at a person, we note how they look. How tall they are, what they're wearing, how they're walking, if they're slouching or being attentive, if they're dressed for the occasion etc. are some aspects we note as soon as we see a person. The fact that our first impressions can be wrong persists but nevertheless, we create an opinion in our mind. A beautiful-looking lady may turn out to be a cold-hearted human, whereas a visually unappealing person might be the f...

OUR ROOTS

I recently heard that a few of my friends had never eaten chaat on the streets. To say that I was shocked would be an understatement! My first genuine thought was - 'Poor them. They never got to experience what chaat actually tastes like'. Not only this, there are some people whom I know who haven't seen a paper-wala or a doodh-wala in their life. This means it's always been packeted milk their entire life and ... god knows what they do with their newspapers!          I know that many traditions have been lost over the years. Though these would be called occurrences rather than traditions, there are some experiences that you ought to have experienced if you've lived in India your entire childhood. Like riding an auto-rickshaw, thinking that cricket is the only sport that exists until you're ten years old, thinking that you would be 'cool' if you could do an accent(and then terribly fail at it), going to tuitions, debating whether your mom will use ...

CINDERELLA

A musical film named Cinderella was released recently and it had an impact on me. The film taught us many lessons and broke many stereotypes, some of which are:  You reap the fruit of the plant you sow.                 In the story, the fairy godmother magically appears but the film showed us how Ella's kindness in saving the caterpillar resulted in her getting help from the godmother.  Determination  Ella was determined to make a life for herself, on her own - emphasis on 'on her o...

MOTHER'S DAY

Today is Mother's day, and ironically I was watching a movie highlighting the importance of a mother (trust me, it wasn't planned). There was a dialogue that said, "mothers are crazy, crazy caring, crazy loving, crazy passionate about you. They spend their life grooming you, they teach you, the good and the bad, they work for you, care for you, they heed to your needs. And all they ask in return is your love." I don't know why, but I felt it was important for me to write this.            I've seen a lot of mothers, my aunts, grandmoms, my mom, my cousins, all of them are moms. I have noticed that there are a lot of different types of moms, apart from the similarities that I mentioned earlier, I have seen that they each have a unique way of raising their kids. Not everyone expresses their love in the same way, and this is where we kids go wrong. We think that they aren't like our friends' mothers. We tend to misunderstand and becom...

PERSPECTIVE

A poor, young boy, during his childhood, experienced first-hand, the humiliation that was being faced by his country and his fellow citizens. He resolved at a young age to change the future of this country and make it a respectable one. He entered a political organization, only to become its head after some time. He anchored an agenda and exhorted people to support him and then, made a big move that could have altered the future of the country if it had not failed. He was imprisoned for a while, only to be released at a time when his country was tearing apart. He filled fellow citizens with optimism and promised a bright and secure future for his country. He was given some power but he ousted the entire government to turn into a dictator. And yes, you guessed it right. We are talking about the one and only, Adolf Hitler. He is widely acknowledged to have dictated Nazi Germany and also to have brutally massacred millions of jews.    ...
